Frosty Freez Opens April 1…But They Want You To Burn A Few Calories Before Then

By  |  0 Comments

On March 26th, you’re going to want to head down to Second Beach for their Inaugural Family Fun 5k.

There are two big signs that spring has arrived on Aquidneck Island. The first, as we’ve just seen, is Newport’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The second is when Frosty Freez opens its doors on April 1. The annual opening of the Middletown institution draws an only slightly smaller crowd, is just as festive and, interestingly enough, is also celebrating its 60th year!

This year, co-owner Kim Pachico decided to add a little something to the excitement. With no room on the schedule on their opening day, Frosty Freez is expanding the event to include a Family Fun 5k Run on Saturday, March 26.

Having sponsored their employees’ running teams since 2011, Frosty Freez has taken the plunge to set up their own 5k to raise money for the Middletown High School’s Cross Country Team and the Multiple Myeloma Research Fund (MMRF).

Why MMRF? Pachico explained:

I chose the MMRF because it is a charity close to my heart. My grandmother and her best friend both had this incurable (for now) bone marrow/blood cancer, and one of my oldest and dearest friends was diagnosed in December of 2013. Her life-saving bone marrow transplant is a direct result of funded research. The MMRF is one of the #1 rated cancer charities for utilizing their money directly to research. We need to see a cure sooner than later, and want to help them reach their goal.

Frosty Freez Family Fun 5k RouteThe event kicks off at 8:15am with the The Kiddie Cone Run, a .5k fun run which will take place within the Second Beach parking lot. Then, at 8:30am, the big boy race begins, taking runners into Sachuest Point, then up to Third Beach then back around Hanging Rock Road.
