Massive Winter Storm Could Hit Newport Saturday Night

A blizzard just in time for the Newport Winter Festival…

It’s been relatively mild weather-wise this week, which had us wondering about what kind of conditions we might expect during the Newport Winter Festival next week. “What if…” we wondered “…there was no snow?” It looks like there’s a good chance that the chance of a Winter Fest without snow has been greatly diminished, now that Newport Country is under a Winter Storm Watch…per the National Weather Service:

…WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM SATURDAY EVENING THROUGH SUNDAY MORNING… * WHAT…HEAVY SNOW POSSIBLE. PLAN ON DIFFICULT TRAVEL CONDITIONS. TOTAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 4 TO 8 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE. SNOW AMOUNTS ARE STILL UNCERTAIN AND WILL BE DEPENDENT ON TRACK AND IF ANY RAIN MIXES IN NEAR THE SOUTH COAST. * WHERE…NEAR AND SOUTH OF THE MASSACHUSETTS TURNPIKE BUT NOT INCLUDING CAPE COD OR THE ISLANDS. * WHEN…FROM SATURDAY EVENING THROUGH EARLY SUNDAY MORNING. HEAVIEST SNOW EXPECTED FROM 10 PM SATURDAY EVENING THROUGH 5 AM SUNDAY MORNING. RAPIDLY IMPROVING CONDITIONS LATER SUNDAY MORNING AS TEMPERATURES QUICKLY RISE ABOVE FREEZING. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS…SNOWFALL RATES OF 1 INCH PER HOUR ARE POSSIBLE AT TIMES. SIGNIFICANT REDUCTIONS IN VISIBILITY ARE POSSIBLE ALONG WITH SNOW COVERED ROADWAYS. IN ADDITION…IF THE HIGHER SNOWFALL AMOUNTS ARE REALIZED THERE WILL BE A LOW RISK FOR ISOLATED POWER OUTAGES GIVEN THIS WILL BE A WET SNOW. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS… A WINTER STORM WATCH MEANS THERE IS POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT SNOW, SLEET OR ICE ACCUMULATIONS THAT MAY IMPACT TRAVEL. CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE LATEST FORECASTS. &&

It looks like the Groundhog might have been right after all.

On a Saturday night?

This is Newport, not Wakefield. Hit up the packie, pop up your windshield wipers, leave the car at home and head over to one of our Newport blizzard bars. To be fair, any bar is likely to be open through 1 am. It’s a question of who will have power and all that jazz to open for brunch Sunday morning.

What will the White Horse Tavern look like at 1am when you’re trekking home?

This isn’t our first rodeo, so we can actually show you what the White Horse Tavern will look like in a Newport blizzard:

Anyway, everyone check the weather forecast to make sure that this potential storm is going to become an actual blizzard and plan accordingly.
