Newport Has A New Colorful Billionaire Family Moving In Next Door

The Ocean Lawn mansion has been sold for $11.65 million to the family that co-founded Paul Mitchell cosmetics and Patron tequila.

Newport’s list of colorful and eccentric characters is about to get a little bit longer now that the DeJoria family dropped $11.65 million on the Ocean Lawn, a 16,237-square-foot mansion sitting on 6 ocean-front acres, abutting Newport’s iconic Cliff Walk. For those who don’t know the family name, you’re certainly familiar with the companies they own.

The family’s patriarch, John Paul DeJoria, is one of the great rags-to-riches stories in recent history. The man went from being homeless to co-founding the Paul Mitchell line of hair products in 1980. He made a small fortune there and used that to co-found the Patrón Spirits Company and according to Wikipedia, has continued to diversify.

DeJoria co-founded the Patrón Spirits Company in 1989 and is a founding partner of the House of Blues nightclub chain and has interests in Pyrat Rum, Smokey Mountain Bison Farm, llc, Ultimat Vodka, Solar Utility, Sun King Solar, Touchstone Natural Gas, Three Star Energy, Diamond Audio, a Harley-Davidson dealership, a diamond company (DeJoria), mobile technology developer ROK AMERICAS, the John Paul Pet company, which does hair and personal grooming for animals, and J&D Acquisitions LLC, the parent company for the Larson, Striper, Triumph, Marquis and Carver boat companies formed with Minneapolis-based investor Irwin L. Jacobs.

So long story short, Mr. DeJoria is worth $2.8 billion and is not afraid of the spotlight, having appeared in Patron ads and as an investor on the reality show Shark Tank.

While John Paul DeJoria was named as one of the purchasers of the mansion, it appears that his daughter Alexis is the co-purchaser who will be a more active resident of the estate.

Alexis DeJoria

Newport has had no shortage of heiresses over its history, but we doubt there’s been anyone remotely similar to Alexis DeJoria. That’s because heiresses aren’t typically known for engaging in risky behavior, let alone making a career out of drag-racing funnycars.

If things weren’t so polar-opposite of New England blue bloods quite yet, Alexis is married to Jesse James, best known, depending on your personal interests, as a reality-tv custom motorcycle builder or Sandra Bullock’s ex.

Why?

Why would a NHRA driver and possibly the world’s most famous motorcycle mechanic buy a Newport mansion?

Likely to have a nice spot close to Alexis’ mother, Jamie Briggs, who returned to Narragansett after 40 years in California. Alexis has assisted her mother’s efforts to help Sallie Latimer raise funds to restore the Earles Court water tower.

So don’t expect any big changes at Ocean Lawn. In a statement, Alexis announced that she intends to keep the estate reflecting its splendid history.

“My father and I invested in this property so all of our family can enjoy it. We appreciate the estate’s rich history and plan on retaining its Gilded Age grandeur.”

That said, the Bellevue crowd is likely getting a bunch of tattoos and a hell of a lot more tequila. This could be be fun.
