The Newport Spot That Will Let Her Know She’s Your No. 1 Side Piece

Vogue’s “Hotels With Provocative Pasts for Your Next Clandestine Affair” includes a high-end local establishment.

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, romance is in the air (along with a lot of snow). There’s plenty of “normal” romance where boyfriends and husbands do the V-day thing to placate their significant others. Then there’s the other kind of romance which isn’t typically above board, which Newport has a little bit of history with.

This isn’t to say that Newport is a town full of cheaters. It’s just that the city has historically been a playground for the rich, rich guys have options and, as Chris Rock famously said, “Men are as faithful as their options.” When you’re super-rich, one of your options is to build a mansion to meet up with your mistress in.

At least, that’s the well spread rumor about the building now known as the Vanderbilt Grace Hotel, and the one Vogue magazine ran with when naming the hotel one of its “Hotels With Provocative Pasts for Your Next Clandestine Affair“.

The Vanderbilt Grace, Newport, Rhode Island
Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt was rumored to have built this stately brick mansion by the sea in 1909 as a summer home to rendezvous with his mistress, but today the boutique hotel makes for a romantic retreat year round. With bright, spacious rooms and suites, a lush garden terrace, and a spa, the Vanderbilt Grace exudes a fresh, contemporary appeal without sacrificing an ounce of its Gilded Age allure. Centrally located in downtown Newport, sailing, tennis, and other classic New England summer endeavors are all close at hand, or stroll the coast-hugging Cliff Walk and marvel at the string of massive mansions. Evenings call for cocktails on the hotel’s rooftop bar, where an Adirondack chair makes for the perfect perch to take in a spectacular sunset over the Newport Harbor. In colder months, the Christy Room beckons with snug nooks by the fireplace, or you can take a dip in the heated indoor pool, or retreat to your room with a cocktail amenity kit, offered at check in this winter, to mix drinks and toast your own rendezvous.

We do have to give the Vanderbilt Grace credit…it is one of Newport’s hidden gems. The roof deck is about to undergo renovations before the summer season, but we expect the sunset views to remain unchanged…and spectacular (and accompanied by some amazing cocktails).

Speaking of Cocktails…

In keeping with the romantic time of year, the Vanderbilt Grace’s bar manager Adrienne has created a drink menu perfect for Valentines.

Somewhere in there should be the perfect beverage for your wife, girlfriend, other girlfriend, or other other girlfriend. We recommend the “Forbidden Love”, because nothing spells out fiery passion like a blowtorch. (No, we’re not kidding. The bartender will break out a blowtorch.)

So if you were trying to figure out where to take your girl on Valentines Day (or the day before or after because you have a “damn meeting” with “management” the day of), now you know.
