Sunbather On Top Of Portsmouth Wind Turbine Becomes World-Famous

Drone caught man taking a nap on top of Portsmouth Abbey’s windmill.

The top of Portsmouth Abbey’s wind turbine is probably the most scenic vantage points on Aquidneck Island. For one gentleman, it’s also a great spot to lie down and catch some rays, safe from the prying eyes of the world.

Unfortunately for that guy, it’s 2015 and drones exist, as does the British press. Both the Daily Mirror and the Daily Mail ran with the story after getting a hold of the video footage, making the mystery sun-worshiper possibly the world’s most famous.

It appears this was all far more excitement than the San Diego-based Kevin Miller, on vacation with his girlfriend in the Ocean State.

Kevin said: ‘My girlfriend and I were vacationing. I thought this was my chance to get up close to capture what is usually tough to access. So I decided to drive up to get a super close video while it was not in operation.

‘When I reached the bottom, I noticed that the maintenance door was open and thought someone was up inside doing repairs.

‘The guy must have been napping because he did not notice the drone for 5-10 seconds, but once he heard it he sat up to take a look.

‘At that point I decided to take a closer look by moving closer to say “hi”. Once I got closer I moved the drone side to side to say hello and he motioned back to the drone. It was a cool interaction between us.

‘Upon landing he saw me bring the drone down and was leaning over the edge. I looked up and wave to him and he waved back. Very fun.’

At least the mystery man kept his clothes on.

CORRECTION: We initially believed this was the Town of Portsmouth’s non-functional turbine at Portsmouth High School. It’s actually the slightly smaller turbine at Portsmouth Abbey. The story has been changed to correct the error.
