Two Dead In Wake Of Tiverton Shootings

Shooting at Pocasset Hill Cemetery results in police chase, dead suspect.

At around 7pm Monday night Tiverton Police responded to a shooting at Pocasset Hill Cemetary (off Main Road). They engaged a suspect who led them on a short chase across the street to 110 Ford Farm Road, where he engaged police in a firefight and was killed. The Fall River Herald reports:

Tiverton, Fall River and Little Compton rescue crews responded to a report of shots fired with injuries at 110 Ford Farm Road in Tiverton shortly after 7 p.m. Monday, according to scanner reports and neighbors.

Reports from the scene indicate that the shootout started at Pocasset Cemetery at about 7 p.m. and moved over to Ford Farm Road. Witnesses and neighbors at the scene indicated that they heard three gunshots at the cemetery, followed by about six on Ford Farm Road.

Neighbors say police may have fired shots during the second round of gunfire at Ford Farm Road. Shortly afterward, neighbors reported hearing sirens. There may have been a short car chase between the two scenes.

Witnesses also said the parties involved appeared to be elderly people, possibly even a man in his 80s.

In addition to Tiverton, Fall River and Little Compton crews on the scene, Rhode Island State Police crews responded, and a state police mobile crime unit was on the scene.

Two Tiverton officers and an officer from Fall River were taken to St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River, following protocol.

UPDATE: The murder victim has been identified as John Cloud of Kingston, MA. The dead suspect is Edward C. Acquisto, 80, of Tiverton. According to Tiverton Police, Mr. Acquisto has a lengthy criminal record, including a previous conviction for manslaughter.

According to records, this is the first case of murder in Tiverton since 2010.
