What’s Happening on Small Business Saturday in Newport

Newport knows how to celebrate “shopping small” this holiday season

The nationwide Small Business Saturday campaign has been going strong for a few years now. In 2010, American Express launched Small Business Saturday in an effort to support small businesses amidst the two established holiday shopping days after Thanksgiving—Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Newporters could show the rest of the country how to “go local”—we pretty much live and breathe the spirit of Small Business Saturday everyday.

We have farmer’s markets. Designer clothing boutiques. Consignment shops, too. Hair salons. Galleries. Yoga studios. Plenty of other fitness studios. Coffee shops. Breweries. Bars and restaurants. Like a lot of restaurants, really…

Any service you could possibly want or need, there’s probably a small business for it downtown or on the Island.

If you’re planning to support your family, friends and neighbors in Newport this Small Business Saturday, here’s a list of some cool events happening:

Newport Art Museum’s Faculty and Student Holidays Arts & Crafts Sale

10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Looking for unique gift ideas? Support local artists and arts education by purchasing gifts made by faculty and students at the Museum’s art school, the Coleman Center for Creative Studies. Some of the items for sales include ceramic tableware and ornaments, quilts, paintings, prints, cast paper ornaments, and pure olive oil soap.

Egg & Dart’s 9th Annual Holiday Ornament Party and Art Show

6:00 – 9:00 p.m.

There will be hundreds of beautiful hand-painted ornaments on display, as well as new artwork, by artist and gallery co-founder Chris Wyllie. Egg & Dart also carries a selection of gifts for the home handpicked by Kristen Coates, curator and co-founder.

Water Brothers’ Kickstarter Party with Mission NPT

9:00-11:00 p.m.

After a long day of shopping downtown, grab a burger and a beer with your friends at Mission to support Water Brothers’ Kickstarter campaign. There will also be a hodgepodge of artwork made by local artists on display and available for purchase. All proceeds—food, drink and art—will go towards Water Brothers’ Kickstarter.
