Benny’s Is Going BUST

All 31 Benny’s stores will close at the end of the year.

Rhode Island-based retailer Benny’s is calling it quits. The family-owned chain is shutting its doors at the end of they year, meaning the loss of 715 local jobs. The third generation to run Benny’s, President Arnold Bromberg and his siblings, have decided to shutter the company, citing a desire to retire and shifting retail trends.

Benny’s was opened in 1924 by Benjamin Bromberg. Initially, he sold auto parts and radio equipment out of a single Providence location before the selection and locations grew.

A Rhode Island Institution

Benny’s is recognized as one Rhode Island’s most famous retailers. Unfortunately, many,  like Almac’s, have disappeared over the years and now there’s going to be another gone.

It’s a tough market for small chain retailers, who are squeezed by big box stores like Wal Mart on one side and Amazon and other e-commerce sites on the other.

The closest Benny’s to Newport is located at 1400 W Main Rd, Middletown, RI 02842.

So stop by and see if you can get some clearance deals.
