Columbus Day Weekend Brings Newport An Incredible Assortment Of Events

By  |  0 Comments

The Rogue Island Comedy Festival and Broadway Street Fair are just two of the highlights.

Fall is that time in Newport when things get a little more concentrated. All summer long, “everything” was happening all the time and pretty much everything was busy. After Labor Day, Newport can no longer count on “because it’s there” as a selling point. There’s a shift towards specific events. Fortunately, this weekend, there are a whole lot of “specific events”.

The Rogue Island Comedy Festival

This year marks the second year of one of the biggest comedy events in New England. This year, it’s gotten a bit bigger with a total of ten shows at three different venues.

Organizer and Performer Doug Key has pulled out all the stops and brought in an incredible array of comic talent. We’d copy and paste the whole schedule for the rest of the weekend, but we’re feeling lazy and there’s a whole website dedicated to that here.

If there are still tickets available for the 9pm show at Studio 3 on Saturday, we can’t recommend catching Ray Harrington enough. Having seen him a few times, we’ve only caught about 5 minutes of prepared material. Otherwise the guy just wings it, taking his audience down a rabbit hole to hilarity unlike anyone else we’ve ever seen. Also, if you liked our article on a URI Freshman ending up on a misadventure after accidentally texting RI comedian¬†Brian Beaudoin, you’ll want to catch him hosting the 7pm show at Studio 3 on Sunday!

If you’re an aspiring comedian, check out the open mic sessions being held during the days at Empire Tea & Coffee.

Broadway Street Fair

Starting with a ribbon cutting for Broadway’s (mostly) finished roadworks at noon, this is going to be quite the party for Newport as a whole and Broadway in particular. There will be four stages with plenty of performers, dozens of vendors, plenty of food options (and lots of bars if you get thirsty).

Here’s the schedule:

So there’s going to be plenty to do and see on Broadway from noon until 6.

Festival In The Park

italian-festival-in-the-park11am until 4pm on Saturday, Touro Park will host the Italian Festival in the Park!

The Sons of Italy have their Festa Italiana a celebration of Italian heritage.

More details here.

Newport Marathon & Half Marathon

Sunday morning, Newport will host the Newport Marathon and Half Marathon.

For more info about routes, times, activities, etc. check out the marathon website.

…and more!

There are a lot more smaller events taking place and we’ll hopefully be able to add them as time allows.
