Head to Gurney’s Newport for Corey Hayes’ Gin Lane concoction.

It’s officially summertime, which means watermelons. USA Today celebrated with a slideshow of *100* dishes, desserts and drinks. If you ask us, that was 99 too many. The only watermelon cocktail you need is #73.

Gurney's Watermelon Sunset Cocktail Gin Lane Corey Hayes

In Newport, R.I., Gurney’s makes its Watermelon Sunset with Gin Lane 1751 ‘Victoria’ Pink gin, watermelon puree, lemon juice, Campari and Luxardo Maraschino.

That cocktail really sounds amazing, but what’s a bit more interesting is the moving parts that came together to make that drink by that man happen at that place.

The Back Story

Bartender Corey Hayes Mixologist

Corey Hayes has been making amazing cocktails for a while now. He started his mixology education in Vail, Colorado and has spent a whole lot of time with his nose in bartending manuals, pencilling new cocktail recipes into a little black book. He was that little extra that made Fluke one of Newport’s best craft cocktail bars.

Now he’s moved on.

Corey had wanted more autonomy in running a bar and now he’s got it.

Be careful what you wish for…

Unfortunately, Corey never got the opportunity to develop a drink menu for a restaurant he was bartending at. Nope, he had to develop the drink menus for five bars…from scratch…and he no longer has any bartending shifts. A couple months ago he was recruited to become the beverage manager for Gurney’s Newport (aka the old Hyatt on Goat Island). So while winning an actual bartending competition remains on Corey’s to-do list, this is his way of winning the cocktail contest of life.

Regent Cocktail Club opens this weekend

Gurney’s Scarpetta Restaurant has opened to rave reviews. The Pineapple Club, the Hyatt’s “Pineapples” upgraded, is operational and one of the best places to catch a Newport sunset. Now, this weekend, just in time for the Fourth of July, the Regent Cocktail Club opens.

So come by and check it out. Maybe grab a Watermelon Sunset or two.
