Newport, RI Just Got An Indian Restaurant

Newport’s first Indian Restaurant in years has just opened.

If there’s one style of restaurant that Newport has been lacking in recent years, it’s Indian. If you were craving a curry, there have been quite a few Thai places around, but it’s been close to two decades since Newport last had an Indian restaurant. In that time, we’re guessing that demand has gone up just a tad, because you know how people get about weird foreign food. Based on how big Indian food is in London, we’ve often hypothesized that the whole “British Empire” venture was a bid to get good take-out in London. But I digress….Newport, RI’s new Indian Restaurant is..Curryland.

A few hours ago, Curryland took to Facebook to post a video announcing that they are open.

So this is a nice replacement for Cilantro, which was a nice spot to get some spicy food right off the Navy Base. Tablecloths and cloth napkins are also a nice touch. As you can see from the video, it’s a very different looking spot than the burrito spot it replaces.

Curryland is located at 163 JT Connell Highway in what was Cilantro’s location (BTW, in case you missed it, Cilantro closed). If you don’t know where that it, it’s the little 3-shop island next to the Stop & Shop gas pumps.

With the opening of TSK and now Curryland, it’s getting to be that time of the spring when you want to try out the new Newport restaurants before the season hits, just so you don’t have to reveal your lack of savoir faire when the tourists start treating you like a Yelp app.
