The Perfect Date, According To Miss Rhode Island

All you need is a light jacket.

The perfect date is typically considered a very subjective affair. It’s the epicĀ event which takes a very perceptive individual with incredible attention to detail…and with a certain level of means. One might think of an afternoon at Newport Polo, followed by a sunset cruise, dinner at Bouchard and then cocktails at Fluke. Or perhaps the dozen or so variations Newport offers on that theme.

Alternatively, we can go with Miss Rhode Island’s suggestion in the movie Miss Congeniality when told, “Describe your perfect date.”

That’s a tough one. I’d have to say April 25th. Because it’s not too hot, not too cold, all you need is a light jacket.

It’s not true, however.

April 25 is not the perfect date.

Weather-wise, April 25 is usually temperate, but here in Newport, the atmosphere is still…lacking. One should wait at least another month before attempting a perfect date. Have no fear, a light jacket will likely do well then, too.

If we were to suggest our own, arbitrary perfect date, it would probably be around June 10th. Most kids are still in school so the traffic and crowds haven’t reached full-power summer levels, but you can head out in summer attire mid-day and still be comfortable outside at midnight.

One can flip over to the fall, too. Those two weeks after Labor Day are typically beautiful, weather-wise…and with the kids back in school, it’s possible to at least weave your way around packs of slow-moving tourists to get the a dinner reservation you made without too much difficulty. If we have to pick just one date we’ll go with…September 13.
