The Turbo A.C.’s Are Coming! The Turbo A.C.’s Are Coming!

The Brooklyn punk band is playing Newport, RI and they’re bringing one of our prodigal sons with them!

This Thursday, The Cafe at Parlor is hosting the kickoff of the Turbo A.C.’s tour. They’re about to hit the road with Two Man Advantage, but before they do, they’re hitting Newport for an event that includes FOUR bands. Any more and they’d call it a “Festival”, which we think everyone can admit, doesn’t sound very punk.

Let’s take a look at the lineup…

We Own Land

A little Tom Petty ta get ya started

If you’ve followed live music in Newport, you’ve seen these guys play. If you’ve just walked around Newport, you’ve probably seen one of their stickers somewhere. Now, you may have been confused as to why someone would announce land ownership on the bumper of their car, but now you know they’re one of Newport’s most hard-rocking musical entities.

Zip-Tie Handcuffs

Self-described as “Warm wondrous wild wandering weird wailing wicked wiley wrock wooooooooaahh!!!”, the power trio of Matt Ford, Ian Grinold and Max Levy have been kicking the Boston music scene since 2007, combining the ferocity of punk with lush vocal melodies and a touch of psychedelia.

Atlantic Thrills

That video, while not exactly what most people would call “tame”, is certainly on the lighter side for Atlantic Thrills, a band whose ability to cross genres is a talent that music critics are raving about. Based out of Providence, this band has been doing their thing since 2010. Last year they released their self-titled debut album and they’ve continued to crush it ever since.

The Turbo A.C.’s

Turbo ACS lineup

These guys are the punk rock incarnation of David Hasselhoff. No, we don’t mean that they’re tatted up and pierced lifeguards, nor that they drive a spray-painted robotic Trans-Am, but that they’re huge in Germany. Playing “The Champagne of Surf Guitar Punk” since 1995, they’ve toured with The Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly and Rancid, which translates roughly into “kind of a big deal”.

One sort of odd thing is that lead singer Kevin Cole, one of the band’s founders has recently left New York to start a pizzeria in Puerto Rico of all places. As Newporters are well familiar with, there’s a slow season for the Revolution Pizza Shop, which, fortunately for Turbo A.C.’s American audience, means the band can get fired back up and go on tour. Check this great interview Cole just did with Rob Duguay.

One member of the band should be familiar to the Newport crowd. Mike O’Donnell AKA Mickey Millionaire of Skinny Millionaires fame is the band’s “acoustic guitar guy”.
